Attendance and exams

Attendance at the School's educational activities is compulsory.

Absence

Unjustified absences of more than 60 hours of teaching activities will result in exclusion from the school. Excused absences (pregnancy, illness, other causes assessed by the Board of Directors) of no more than 70 hours of diudactic activities are permitted. If the absence does not exceed a total of 130 hours, the Board of Directors shall establish the procedures and timetable for ensuring that the training is completed within the two years, or otherwise the repetition of the year.

Transition from the first to the second year of the programme and admission to the diploma examination are subject to the favourable opinion of the Board of Directors on the basis of the assessment of the mid-term tests relating to the various teaching activities. In the event of an unfavourable judgement, the student may repeat the course year only once.

The requirements for passing the first year and admission to the second year are:

  • attendance at the lessons of the first year of the School in accordance with the provisions of Ministerial Decree no. 537 of 21/12/1999
  • 150 hours of internship to be carried out at law firms or notaries or at judicial offices
  • two written tests to be carried out in the classroom in each of the following subjects: Civil Law, Civil Procedure Law, Criminal Law, Criminal Procedure Law, Administrative Law.

The requirements for passing the second year and admission to the final examination are:

  • attendance at the lessons of the second year of the School in accordance with the provisions of Ministerial Decree 21/12/1999, n. 537
  • 150 hours of internship to be carried out at law firms or notaries or at judicial offices
  • two written tests to be carried out in the classroom in each of the following subjects: Civil Law, Civil Procedure Law, Criminal Law, Criminal Procedure Law, Administrative Law.

The final dissertation consists of three separate written dissertations to be carried out in the classroom using only the uncommented codes, nor annotated with case law and doctrine. The three tests cover the following subjects: civil law and civil procedure law; criminal law and criminal procedure law; Administrative Law and Administrative Justice.

The final assessment is based both on the outcome of the final examination and on the outcome of the written tests carried out in the classroom over the two-year period in each of the five subjects mentioned.

All lectures and written tests will take place in person.

In a communication dated 15 July 2016, the Milan Bar Association stated that it had verified that the calendar and timetable of the lectures of the School of Legal Professions established at the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore are certainly compatible with the need to allow the effective performance of legal practice, a requirement repeatedly represented by the Council of the Milan Bar Association, including on the occasion of the issue of certifications requested by the students of the Schools of the legal professions operating in Lombardy.

Of course, this is without prejudice to any assessment of the competence of the Council of the Bar with regard to the verification of professional practice.
