Graduate Schools

The Graduate Schools System of Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore is composed of eight academic structures dedicated to training, research and the enhancement of knowledge on the main contemporary transformation processes.

The Graduate Schools operate as scientific communities as well as learning communities, oriented towards the in-depth analysis of phenomena and the understanding of the roots of such phenomena, with the aim of translating knowledge into useful tools for the society. The knowledge produced is developed and shared through a collaborative approach, which integrates different disciplinary skills and promotes dialogue with institutions, companies, and local actors.

At the heart of the Graduate Schools' activities is the ability to read the context, interpret its meaning, and responsibly contribute to the evolution of social, economic, and cultural systems. The valorization of the network and of the relationships is a strategic element to understand complexity and generate impact.

In keeping with the University's tradition, the Graduate Schools combine innovation, scientific rigour and institutional belonging, working for the common good according to the “Knowledge in action” principle.

Every year, the Graduate Schools activate over 50 Specialising Master Programmes, with more than 1,000 students, and over 90 Executive, Continuing Education and Summer School courses for more than 4,000 professionals. They also sign over 40 applied research and consultancy agreements and carry out about 90 Public Engagement initiatives involving 5,000 people including teachers, students and professionals from various sectors. Overall, about 270 business partnerships per year are established.

The Graduate Schools were created as the highest point of university education, the outpost of a dynamic professional education.
One of the aims of the Graduate Schools is to have professionals who are not only performers, but also decision-makers. Knowing about change means knowing how to make good decisions.

The twofold objective of the Graduate Schools can be summarised as follows: as deep a knowledge as possible within an area, but also as wide a knowledge as possible, including what connects the various areas. This is the big question of the global system and this is the answer we give.

Lorenzo Ornaghi, Rector 2002-2012
