We are preparing to enter a decisive phase in the history of our University. The formulation of the Strategic Plan of Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore for the period 2026-2028 represents the start of a process that I intend to build together with all the components of our community, outlining priority and fundamental themes to harmonize innovation and tradition, quality and inclusion, openness and attractiveness.

The Strategic Plan

The Strategic Plan is the programmatic and working tool for organising, planning and directing the University's activities in the coming years. The Strategic Plan of Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore for the three-year period 2026-2028 is the objective of a shared process through which to develop a clear, coherent, articulated and public strategic vision with reference to policies and actions that affect all the dimensions of academic life as well as the people who make it real and concrete.     

The process of formulating the Plan is an opportunity for the entire university community to play a leading role. This participatory and integrated process begins with listening, through structured activities, to contributions, ideas, and proposals from all stakeholders, both internal and external, who have been invited to express their views.

 

We are called upon to promote projects that, by generating impact, leave their mark and are fully integrated with the teaching, research and third mission activities of our community. All this is done while keeping alive our innate dedication to cultivating authentic relationships with students, to accompanying them in understanding a reality that needs their transformative talent.

These aims are defined through some major themes to be addressed: maximum international openness, innovation in training and teaching, as well as in the field of scientific research, development of third mission activities and social impact projects, enhancement of all the figures who at a human and professional level are, by choice, part of the university community.

The Strategic Plan aims to enhance the identity of the University, at the foundations of which we find the commitment to the integral development of the person and the search for the common good, focusing on values and principles that, in the general framework, are the beacon towards which to head:

  • Questioning the fundamental issues, with a free spirit, in search of the truth, to offer a significant contribution towards the urgent issues of the contemporary world which are fundamental for humanity, society, the planet.
  • Fostering transdisciplinarity as a development of interdisciplinarity, with the aim of fostering dialogue between disciplines, promoting exchanges and new combinations of knowledge and skills.
  • Promoting the logic of community, which is rooted in the meeting and discussion between professors, students, technical-administrative staff, pastoral assistants in all the campuses and through all the structures of the extensive institutional network of Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore.

     

     

The Strategic Plan formulation method

The guiding principles of the Strategic Plan formulation method fundamentally reflect the identity of Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore as a non-profit university, and as a community responsibly oriented towards quality and continuous improvement:

The 2026-2028 Strategic Plan promotes, in its implementation, a participatory process that enhances the active involvement of all components of the University and aims to generate a favourable context in which people can express their potential to the fullest.

Strategic governance is based on collegiality, enhancing the role of academic structures, such as the Faculties and the Academic Senate, in moments of discussion and guidance. In this context, the plurality of campuses, capable of maintaining an integrated network between the University and the territories, is a great added value.

Strategic management is based on a methodological framework where analytical information flows and shared rules guide decisions towards effectiveness and sustainability. 

             

     

     

The guiding principles of the vision

The formulation of the 2026-2028 Strategic Plan is nourished by a new and prospective vision: to create recognisable and recognised training programmes, research activities that offer a contribution of thought to the fundamental issues of every era, initiatives that are able to interpret the universality of the adjective "catholic" as "To be the best University for the world, in the world". There are three guiding principles of this approach:

 

     

The strategic pillars

The University Community can contribute to the formulation of the 2026-2028 Strategic Plan by participating in moments where listening becomes crucial to grasp shared reflections, ideas and proposals. There are several ways in which it is possible to participate: thematic workshops in which to take part in an extended discussion; a survey that, by means of a questionnaire, allows participants to report their opinions; a Call for Ideas section, to submit project proposals, reserved for the University Community – using the e-mail address with @unicatt domain and @icatt. 

The issues to be addressed are the fundamental pillars of the path towards which Università Cattolica is oriented, identified to face contemporary and international challenges, with the ambition of innovating its outlook and practices, irrevocably enhancing its identity.  The strategic pillars identified are in dialogue and in relation to each other. Each constitutes a thematic area with its own peculiarities and, at the same time, a piece of the broader strategic design that together and circularly is a coherent and interconnected system:

Establishment of a School of Knowledge Integration

A project to enhance the interdisciplinary nature of Università Cattolica in addressing the major issues of our time, starting from a transversal and transdisciplinary perspective, avoiding the risk of excessive specialisation and fragmentation of skills

Quality educational offer, in person and remotely

Based on the renewal of the Faculties' educational offer and the activation of programmes on an international digital platform, it aims to accompany students in continuing education, embracing the entire span of their professional lives. In fact, the University aims to bridge the gap between the perceived quality and the real value of online education, positioning itself as an authoritative player also in the digital sphere, without losing the authentic purpose of teaching

Valorisation of research and researchers

As scientific research is one of the driving and distinctive elements of Università Cattolica, the University aims to raise its profile as an even more incisive research university. With this in mind, the aim is to promote a favourable research environment that enhances the University's talent and scientific planning, through funded calls and support for young researchers

Internationalization, accreditations and ranking

The objectives are: on the one hand, to increase the global dimension of the University through international accreditations, to enhance study paths and implement positioning in international rankings; on the other hand, to continue with the implementation of the Africa Plan and consolidate the networks between Catholic universities, such as FUCE, FIUC and SACRU, through joint projects in scientific research and in the educational offer starting from common value roots

Fundraising inspired by identity principles

Ensure over time the creation of an endowment that leverages identity aspects; carry out initiatives aimed not only at raising resources, but at strengthening relations with external interlocutors to support strategic projects in the long term and preserve the accessibility to the University of deserving students without economic resources, thanks to scholarships and loans of honour

Building on solid foundations

The participatory process has a starting point: the listening process through which the University Community has the opportunity to share ideas, testimonies and proposals.

At the end of this process, specific Working Groups, made up of academic and administrative expert representatives, will process the information received from the University Community to define the strategic objectives that will determine the activities of the next three years.

A concrete visionary community

The 2026-2028 Strategic Plan is a project designed to achieve the educational, cultural, scientific and social objectives of the coming years of activity of Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore with a "visionary" and "concrete" approach. Therefore, the collaboration of the University community is fundamental, thanks to its ability to think, envisage and implement innovative ideas that become reality. Being a concrete visionary community starts from being an educating community, open to challenges in the world and a point of reference for the world, with roots firmly planted in its history and identity.
