Fondazione Policlinico Universitario "Agostino Gemelli" IRCCS

The Policlinico Gemelli was founded on 10 July 1964 by the Toniolo Institute of Higher Education and Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore. It is the main campus of the “A. Gemelli” Faculty of Medicine and Surgery, and is one of the largest private hospitals in Europe, a place where every day teaching, innovative research, care and assistance activities interact for the benefit of the community, to offer all patients – both adults and children - access to the best available therapies.

The centrality of the patient as a person, the deployment of cutting-edge skills, technologies and know-how, and the ability to respond to complex treatment needs through increasingly customised solutions are confirmed as the hallmarks of the clinical and care activities deployed every day.

In 2015, Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore and the Toniolo Institute established the Fondazione Policlinico Universitario Agostino Gemelli, a private non-profit organisation.
A synergic and dynamic partnership between teaching, research and care that works every day to build the future, a laboratory where students can put to use and experiment the knowledge acquired in the classroom.
The transformation into a Foundation in 2018 and its subsequent recognition as a Scientific Hospitalization and Treatment Institute have further strengthened the Policlinico's identity as a research-oriented acute care health centre.

The Policlinico Gemelli is now one of the most important research and care centres in Europe;
At international level rankings it has been:

  • Recognised as 1st Hospital in Italy and 38th Hospital in the world (World's Best Hospital 2023)
  • Awarded Joint Commission International (JCI) Accreditation*

* The Fondazione Policlinico Gemelli in 2021 joined the exclusive world club of Joint Commission International (JCI) accredited facilities. The voluntary accreditation process ensures that the healthcare organisation complies with specific standards in terms of quality and safety - for patients and operators - with "transversal" application in every area, thereby certifying excellence in the care provided.
