/ Overview

The Medicine and Surgery integrated degree programme at Università Cattolica’s Bolzano campus prepares students for medical practice in an international, multidisciplinary environment. The programme is taught entirely in English.

The curriculum progressively integrates basic sciences with clinical practice, supporting the development of diagnostic, therapeutic and interpersonal skills essential for medical practice.

The curriculum is organised into interdisciplinary courses that bring together different areas of knowledge, fostering an integrated understanding of health and disease processes.

The programme uses innovative teaching methods based on problem-based learning, clinical case analysis, small-group activities and the continuous integration of theory and practice. From the earliest years, students gain exposure to clinical practice through guided activities that develop clinical reasoning and decision-making skills.

Particular emphasis is placed on the international and multilingual nature of medical practice. Teaching is in English, while clinical activities enable students to develop communication skills in Italian and German, preparing them to work in linguistically and culturally diverse healthcare settings.

Clinical training takes place across the South Tyrol Hospital Network, in close collaboration with the South Tyrol Health Authority (Azienda Sanitaria dell’Alto Adige – SABES), giving students experience in a range of hospital settings and direct contact with tutors and healthcare professionals.  

Practical activities are organised in small groups to support personalised learning and continuous monitoring of students’ skills development.

The programme also includes simulation training, clinical labs, practical sessions and seminars, with particular emphasis on developing practical skills and the doctor-patient relationship through a person-centred approach.

Claudiana - University Centre for Health Professions in Bolzano provides advanced laboratories, simulation labs and facilities dedicated to medical training, within an environment strongly focused on innovation and research. Collaboration with the local healthcare network and proximity to NOI Techpark provide further opportunities for scientific study and project development.

By the end of the programme, students have developed a strong foundation in medical science, clinical skills progressively consolidated through hands-on experience, and an international outlook that is particularly valuable in contemporary healthcare.

Programme structure

The Integrated Six-year Degree Programme in Medicine and Surgery runs for six years (360 ECTS), is taught entirely in English and follows an integrated model of medical education.

The study plan is organised around areas that become progressively more clinically focused, with a strong scientific foundation in the early years and increasing emphasis on hospital-based practice and specialist clinical training in the second half of the programme.

The programme comprises 360 ECTS, approximately 60 credits per year, with a significant component dedicated to clinical and professional training activities.

Progression to subsequent years depends on passing the required examinations and developing the competencies set out in the study plan.

Teaching approach

The Integrated Six-year Degree Programme in Medicine and Surgery at Università Cattolica adopts an integrated teaching approach designed to support progressive clinical training, with an international, multidisciplinary and student-centred focus.

Teaching combines lectures, practical activities, clinical case discussions, laboratory work and small-group sessions, supporting the gradual development of the scientific, clinical and interpersonal skills required for medical practice.

Practical training is a core element of the programme. Clinical activities are progressively introduced across different healthcare settings and are organised in small groups of no more than 10 students, with continuous supervision and ongoing monitoring of students’ skills development. From the early years of the programme, students develop diagnostic, therapeutic and communication skills through increasing direct exposure to professional practice.

Particular emphasis is placed on the programme’s international dimension. Students can take part in mobility programmes, research experiences and Clinical Electives at universities, hospitals and centres of excellence in Europe and worldwide. Activities undertaken abroad may be incorporated into the study plan and recognised as part of the programme.

Teaching is also enriched by opportunities to take part in clinical, translational and epidemiological research, supported by a local environment with a strong focus on scientific and technological innovation.

The programme is delivered in an international and multilingual environment, giving students exposure to different organisational and healthcare models. Learning activities also enable students to strengthen their communication skills in Italian and German, which are particularly relevant to clinical practice in South Tyrol.

Throughout the programme, students have access to tutoring, study support, language support and counselling services, designed to promote personal wellbeing and academic success.

Hospital network and research

Thanks to the collaboration between Università Cattolica and SABES (South Tyrol Health Authority), Medicine and Surgery students can undertake their clinical training across a hospital network covering the local area. This gives them the opportunity to experience different healthcare settings, gain practical experience and work alongside highly qualified professionals from the early years of the programme.

A network of seven hospitals

The SABES network includes the hospitals of Bolzano, Merano, Bressanone, Brunico, Silandro, Vipiteno and San Candido, giving students the opportunity to undertake learning activities in a variety of clinical settings and explore different medical specialties.

Bolzano Hospital, the main referral centre within the network, coordinates a wide range of specialist activities at provincial level and is a key healthcare provider for the local area.

CHRIS Study

A distinctive feature of South Tyrol’s healthcare network is its participation in the CHRIS Study (Cooperative Health Research in South Tyrol), one of the largest population studies conducted in Italy. Developed in collaboration with Eurac Research, with SABES as a strategic partner, the project offers a valuable opportunity to see how epidemiological research is integrated into clinical practice.

Since 2011, the study has followed more than 13,000 participants and analyses cardiovascular, neurological, metabolic and oncological factors, contributing to advances in medical knowledge and precision medicine.

Research and innovation: NOI Techpark

The proximity of NOI Techpark, one of Europe’s leading hubs for biomedical research and technological innovation, gives students the opportunity to engage with cutting-edge projects and interdisciplinary collaborations.

The integration of clinical practice, scientific research and technological innovation enriches the learning experience and helps students develop skills relevant to the future of medicine.

/ Admission

The admission process

To be admitted to the Medicine and Surgery degree programme, applicants must pass the Entrance Exam.

Applicants offered a place must complete pre-enrolment and pay the first instalment of tuition fees, amounting to €4,000.00. If they do not pay by the deadline, they will lose their place, which will be offered to the next eligible applicant in the admission rankings.

For the 2026/27 academic year, 50 places are available for EU citizens and applicants with equivalent status, and 10 places for non-EU citizens residing abroad.

Places are allocated according to applicants' positions in the admission rankings and the scores achieved. Applicants must score at least 20 out of 65 to be considered eligible.

Annual tuition fees total €18,150.00.

The Entrance Exam, which is conducted entirely in English, will take place on 20 May 2026 in a home-based online format, using candidates’ own devices and a remote proctoring platform.

Università Cattolica reserves the right to schedule additional sessions on 21 May 2026 if the number of candidates exceeds the maximum number that can be accommodated remotely in each session.

The general list of candidates called to the exam will be published from 13 May 2026. Candidates will receive their individual exam time by email at least 5 days before the exam.

Candidates who connect after the identity verification process has closed will not be admitted to the exam.

The Entrance Exam consists of 65 multiple-choice questions, distributed as follows:

  • 2 General Knowledge questions;

  • 20 Logical Reasoning questions;

  • 18 Biology questions;

  • 12 Chemistry questions;

  • 4 Physics questions;

  • 4 Mathematics questions;

  • 5 Ethical-Religious Culture questions.

At the end of the exam, each candidate will be required to answer 7 additional backup questions, one for each subject area, within an additional 7 minutes automatically allocated by the exam platform. These backup questions will not count towards the ordinary exam score. They will be used only if, after the scheduled exam sessions have taken place, an issue is identified in one or more questions in a particular subject area that requires the question to be invalidated. In that case only, once the issue has been confirmed, Università Cattolica will replace the invalidated question with the corresponding backup question from the same subject area, in order to ensure objective assessment and equal treatment of all candidates.

Candidates have a maximum of 65 minutes to complete the Entrance Exam, plus 7 minutes for the backup questions. The maximum score is 65 points, awarded as follows:

  • 1 point for each correct answer;

  • minus 0.25 points for each incorrect answer;

  • 0 points for each unanswered question.

A minimum score of 20 out of 65 is required to be eligible for admission to the programme. Applicants who achieve the minimum score will be declared successful only if they rank high enough in the relevant ranking list to fall within the number of available places.

The Entrance Exam is administered through a dedicated platform that enables remote monitoring, both live and through subsequent review of the exam sessions, with audio-video recording of all stages of the procedure.

The room chosen by the candidate to take the exam must be well lit, private and quiet, with a single access door that must remain closed throughout the procedure.

During the exam procedure, candidates are personally responsible for ensuring that their workstation is correctly configured, in accordance with the instructions provided at the beginning of and/or during the exam, and that the room remains isolated.

Failure to comply with the following rules will result in exclusion from the Entrance Exam:

  • Candidates must not leave their workstation after completing the identity verification process, for any reason.

  • Candidates must not use or consult other applications, browsers or web pages. All web pages and programmes must therefore be closed before the exam begins.

  • Candidates must not have any additional devices with them, including additional monitors, keyboards or mice, headphones or earphones, calculators or mobile phones, except for the phone used as the room-monitoring camera. Any functions that could enable the use or management of additional devices, including monitors, keyboards or mice, must also be disabled.

  • Candidates must not speak to or interact with other people.

  • Candidates must not read the exam content aloud.

  • Candidates must not use sheets of paper of any kind, for any reason.

  • Candidates must not consult books, texts, websites, notes or handouts.

  • Candidates must not use earplugs.

  • No other person may be present in the room during the exam.

To take the Entrance Exam, candidates must meet the following minimum technical requirements:

  • Device compatibility: For optimal performance, use a desktop computer, laptop or tablet with a stable internet connection, at least 8 GB of RAM and an Intel Core i5 processor or equivalent.

  • Operating system: The device must run a widely used operating system, such as Windows 8 or later, macOS 10 or later, or a compatible mobile operating system (Android or iOS), depending on the exam requirements.

  • Web browser: Candidates must use the latest version of a widely supported browser, such as Google Chrome or Safari, to ensure compatibility with the exam platform. For further information, consult the browser compatibility guide.

  • Internet connection: A stable and reliable internet connection with a minimum speed of 1 Mbps is required to avoid interruptions.

  • Webcam and microphone: The device must have a working webcam and microphone.

  • System updates: The operating system, browser and antivirus software must be kept up to date to ensure security and compatibility.

  • Desktop and VPN use: Only one desktop may be used. Do not use a VPN, as it may interfere with the exam.

Candidates must check the quality and stability of their internet connection at the workstation and in the room where they will take the exam.

The entry requirements for the Medicine and Surgery programme include English language proficiency at B2 level or above, as defined by the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). This must be demonstrated by an accepted language certificate.

Please note:

  1. The list of accepted language certificates is specified in the Competition Call (Article 10 – Enrolment).

  2. This list is exhaustive and specifies the types of certificates accepted and the minimum score required for each.

  3. Certificates not included in the Competition Call will not be accepted under any circumstances.

  4. The English language certificate must be submitted when completing enrolment, but is not required to take the Entrance Exam.

Only applicants who have completed their entire high school education in English may be exempt from submitting an English language certificate.

In this case, they must provide appropriate documentation confirming the language of instruction throughout their high school education when completing enrolment.

After paying the Application Fee, candidates can access the Online Simulator free of charge through their application profile.

The simulator can be used without limit by registered applicants and contains a database of approximately 3,000 questions from previous Entrance Exams, provided for practice purposes only.

The questions used in the actual Entrance Exam will not be drawn from the simulator.

Tuition fees and scholarships

Being able to approach university studies with confidence also means having access to clear information and appropriate financial support. For the Medicine and Surgery programme, Università Cattolica charges an annual tuition fee of €18,000*, payable in five instalments, and offers scholarships and financial support awarded on the basis of merit and income.

Students may have access to:

  • merit-based scholarships;
  • financial support based on household income;
  • funding opportunities specifically for international students.

From the 2025/26 academic year, students enrolled at the Bolzano campus may also apply for a scholarship from the Autonomous Province of Bolzano, covering university tuition fees and enrolment taxes in full, subject to the conditions set out in the relevant call for applications. Applications may be submitted throughout the academic year and are open to students holding a B2 bilingualism certificate.

Clinical and Research Electives Network

Through a network of international partner universities, students can undertake clinical internships and research activities abroad for periods of two to three months. Admission to the programme is based on academic merit and the language requirements set out in the relevant call for applications.

Selected students may receive financial support and have the activities completed at partner institutions recognised as part of their studies.

Internships and career opportunities

The Faculty offers a range of internship and clinical placement opportunities, allowing students to apply the skills they have developed in real-world professional settings.

Internships and clinical training

Clinical training is at the heart of the programme’s practical experience and takes place across the South Tyrol Hospital Network, coordinated by SABES and comprising seven accredited public hospitals. Students progressively gain experience in a range of clinical settings, from hospitals to community healthcare services.

Internship activities are coordinated through a dedicated structure that organises and monitors training across the healthcare network, ensuring a coherent and integrated experience throughout the programme.

Practical activities follow a structured model:

  • students work in small groups of up to 10;
  • they are assigned to different facilities across the hospital network;
  • they receive continuous supervision from doctors and clinical tutors;

Internships also include experience in community-based medicine through collaboration with the Istituto di Medicina Generale and the Ordine dei Medici, enabling students to observe and understand both hospital-based and community care.

Each student is supported by a dedicated tutor throughout the training pathway, helping them develop clinical skills and progressively take on greater responsibility during practical activities.

Practical training takes place in a multilingual environment, in Italian and German, exposing students to different models of care and providing a comprehensive and adaptable foundation for working across different healthcare systems.

Where the requirements of the programme are met, some internship activities may also be undertaken at other accredited healthcare facilities outside the hospital network, subject to prior assessment and approval by the relevant bodies.

The Career Service supports students and graduates as they prepare to enter the job market, providing career guidance and resources to help them navigate different professional and organisational contexts. It supports the development of transferable skills, creates opportunities to meet employers and helps students develop an informed and coherent career path.

Every year, more than 20,000 students take part in events organised with over 100 partner companies, and more than 9,500 undertake an internship with support from the Career Service and internship tutors.

Career prospects

The Medicine and Surgery integrated degree programme qualifies graduates to practise medicine in Italy and provides direct access to clinical practice within the Italian National Health Service (SSN).

By the end of the programme, graduates can:

  • work independently and as part of a clinical team in hospitals and community healthcare facilities;
  • apply diagnostic and treatment skills across different areas of medicine, including complex clinical situations and rare diseases;
  • work in national and international healthcare settings, including complex, multicultural and resource-limited healthcare systems.

The programme also opens up opportunities in a range of professional and career development areas:

  • clinical, translational and basic research at universities and research institutes;
  • public health and the organisation of healthcare services;
  • the pharmaceutical, biomedical and medical device industries.

Graduates are prepared to work in global and multidisciplinary healthcare settings, supported by strong clinical skills, multilingual communication skills and experience in international and multicultural environments.

Continuing your studies

The qualification provides access to Medical Specialty Training Programmes, as well as advanced training and research opportunities in clinical and healthcare fields.

Graduates can continue their education through:

  • Medical Specialty Training Programmes in Italy, to develop advanced skills in different clinical specialties;
  • Research pathways and Doctoral Programmes in medical, biomedical and healthcare fields at universities and research centres.

The programme’s international structure and English-medium teaching also support access to further training abroad:

  • specialty training programmes and clinical training in Europe, in accordance with the regulations of each country;
  • international academic and clinical programmes in global settings;
  • preparation for international examinations and certifications, including the USMLE (United States Medical Licensing Examination), supporting access to postgraduate training in the United States.

The qualification is recognised at European level and, in accordance with current legislation, provides access to specialty training pathways, postgraduate training and professional selection procedures in European Union countries.

Access to professional and educational pathways in non-EU countries may be subject to additional requirements or qualification recognition procedures under the legislation of the destination country.
