About internships

Internships provide students with an invaluable opportunity to gain firsthand experience in the professional world, allowing them to apply the concepts learned at university and assess their motivation for a specific career path.
An internship is a chance for both professional and personal growth, enriching a student’s academic journey by complementing individual study and university coursework. It serves as an exploratory phase, enabling students to test a particular career field and understand how theoretical knowledge translates into real-world applications within an organization. Recognizing the significance of internships, the University has integrated them into most academic programs as credit-bearing activities. The number of credits awarded and the specific requirements vary depending on the regulations of each Faculty and Degree program.

Internship Details

  • Duration
Internships must last a minimum of 3 months part-time or 2 months full-time.
  • Requirements
The internship is strongly recommended. If a student does not undertake an internship, they may substitute it with other educational activities recognized by the Faculty of Political and Social Sciences.
  • Credits (CFU – Crediti Formativi Universitari)
The internship provides 3 ECTS credits (CFU), which can be obtained in the following five ways:
    1. Internship proposed by the Faculty
Students will be included in a mailing list where internship opportunities and application instructions are shared throughout the year.
    2. Recognition of job experience
Students who have an employment contract in place or have engaged in a relevant job activity during their three-year course may request credit recognition. To do so, they must submit a company-issued letter on official letterhead certifying the nature of the activity. The internship tutor will assess eligibility for credit recognition.
    3. Internship proposed by the student
Students may propose internships lasting between two and three months (between 160 and 320 hours), which will allow them to earn 3 credits. The proposed internship must align with the student’s academic and professional training.
The internship tutor will conduct an initial assessment of its suitability. If there is any uncertainty, the tutor will consult the tutoring commission, which will issue a final decision.
The internship must be conducted at the company’s or institution’s official premises, and students cannot be employed by their parents or relatives.
    4. Alternative activities
As an alternative to an internship, students may choose to take and pass an exam linked to one of the designated laboratory courses (LABs).
  • Activation Procedure
To activate a curricular internship, students must access the website: http://step.unicatt.it.
Before starting the internship, students must discuss the timeframe, procedures, responsibilities, and objectives with the internship tutor. Once they receive confirmation from the tutor, they may proceed with the activation process.
