What is an internship?

The internship is a compulsory component of the study programme. It provides students with practical experience in a professional environment, allowing them to apply the knowledge acquired during their studies, develop professional and interpersonal skills, and enhance their career prospects.

  • Type: Curricular internship (compulsory)
  • Minimum duration: 150 hours
  • Credits awarded: 5 ECTS credits
  • Location: In Italy or abroad
  • Format: On-site or hybrid (combining on-site and remote work)
  • How to apply: Once you have found a host company, contact your university internship tutor and provide your student ID number, degree programme, the company's legal name, and the email address of a company contact person.
  • ECTS recognition: Credits are awarded after enrolling in the dedicated exam session, completing at least 150 internship hours, and submitting all the required documentation to your university internship tutor.

The curricular internship is activated online through the Stage & Placement (STeP) portal https://step.unicatt.it/

  • Once you have found a host company, contact your university internship tutor and provide your student ID number, degree programme, the company's legal name, and the email address of a company contact person.
  • Your tutor will contact the company to define the internship details and explain the activation procedure.
  • The company will register on the STeP portal https://step.unicatt.it/ and sign an agreement with the University (if not already in place). It will then complete and submit the internship project on the platform. Once all required parties have signed the documentation electronically, the internship will be officially activated.

All the required documents are available on the Blackboard page “Stage LM Global Business Management (Piacenza)” and on the STeP portal https://step.unicatt.it/

  • MSc Global Business Management Internship Guidelines
  • Internship Diary (downloadable) and the dedicated upload area for the completed diary
  • Post-Internship Questionnaire for Students

STeP Portal (https://step.unicatt.it/)

  • Company Evaluation Questionnaire: available to the host company from five days before the internship end date until 30 days after its completion. If the company can no longer access the questionnaire through the STeP portal, the student should contact the university internship tutor to request the editable PDF version.

Once the required 150 internship hours have been completed, or no later than three days before the exam session for the official registration of credits, students must complete the following steps in order to successfully conclude the internship and obtain the recognition of the ECTS credits.

Upon completion of the internship, students must:

1. Ensure that the host company completes the Company Evaluation Questionnaire.

Five days before the end of the internship, the company will automatically receive an email from the STeP portal inviting them to complete the questionnaire. The questionnaire will remain available for 30 days after the internship end date.

If the company experiences any difficulties accessing or completing the questionnaire, or if it needs to submit it before the internship ends, the student should contact the university internship tutor to request an editable PDF version. In this case, the student will be responsible for uploading the completed questionnaire to the Blackboard course.

2. Complete the Post-Internship Questionnaire for Students.

The questionnaire is available on the Global Business Management Internship Blackboard course and must be completed within 30 days after the end of the internship, or at least five working days before the exam session for the official registration of credits (whichever comes first), provided that the student has completed at least 150 internship hours.

3. Submit the Internship Diary.

The Internship Diary must be fully completed, signed by the company tutor, and uploaded to the Blackboard course.

Once all the required documents have been submitted and approved, students may request the official registration of their ECTS credits.

  • Can I obtain my ECTS credits before the internship has officially ended?
Yes, but only in exceptional cases, such as an upcoming graduation session or departure for a Double Degree programme. Please contact your university internship tutor for further information.
  • Can I end my internship before the planned end date?
Yes, provided that both the host company agrees and you have completed the compulsory minimum of 150 internship hours.
  • Do I need to attend the credit registration exam session in person?
No. There is no in-person attendance required. You simply need to ensure that all the required documentation has been completed and submitted.
  • Can I complete my internship abroad?
Yes. Internships may be carried out abroad. The activation procedure must always be completed through the STeP portal. Your first points of contact are always your University Internship Tutor and UCSC International. Email (UCSC International): programmi.internazionali-pc@unicatt.it
  • Can my current employment be recognised instead of completing an internship?
Possibly. Employment activities may be evaluated by the Internship Committee for the recognition of ECTS credits. Please contact your university internship tutor for further information.
  • Can I complete the internship entirely remotely?
No. The internship cannot be carried out entirely remotely. It may be completed either fully on-site or in a hybrid format, combining on-site and remote work.
  • Can I complete my internship in a family business?
We strongly encourage students to undertake their internship in an organization other than a family business. This provides a valuable opportunity to broaden their professional experience, work in a different organizational environment, and develop new skills and perspectives. If you nevertheless wish to carry out your internship within a family business, a specific evaluation procedure will apply.
  • I have already completed an internship for which I received ECTS credits. Can I do another one?
Yes. However, it will either be:
    - a curricular internship without the recognition of additional ECTS credits, or
    - if you have already graduated, an extracurricular post-graduation internship.
In both cases, you may contact the Career Service for further information: ser.stage-pc@unicatt.it
