What is an internship

The internship is a training experience carried out within organization (institutions, companies, etc.) that offers students their first contact with the professional world, in view of future career choices. The University recognizes the activities carried out during the internship period as an integral part of the learning process, complementing classroom teaching and individual study.

The internship is optional. It is called project internship (stage di progetto), grants 8 ECTS credits, and is graded on a 30-point scale.

Internship and Placement Committee of the Faculty of Economics:

Prof. Roberta Paroli (Coordinator)

  • Accounting: Professors Irene Lisi, Ugo Lassini, and Elisa Raoli
  • Banking & Finance: Prof. Andrea Paltrinieri
  • Business Policy: Prof. Marco Minciullo
  • Data Analytics: Prof. Alessia Pini
  • Economics: Prof. Giovanni Ursino
  • HR, Organisation & ICT: Prof. Chiara Paolino
  • Marketing & Communication: Professors Roberta Sebastiani, Alessia Anzivino, and Silvia Biraghi
  • Dr. Mario Daniele (Tutor for the areas: Data Analytics; Economics; Marketing & Communication)
  • Dr. Andrea Mariani (Tutor for the area: Accounting)
  • Dr. Giovanna Pugno Vanoni (Tutor for the areas: Banking & Finance; Business Policy; HR, Organisation & ICT)

Eligibility to undertake the internship requires earning at least 48 ECTS credits by September 30 or at least 72 ECTS credits by March 31. In October and April of each academic year, the Internship Committee, in collaboration with the administrative offices, prepares a list of students eligible for the project internship.

  • Eligibility obtained by the September deadline allows students to start the internship on any date from September 1, and it remains valid throughout the year.
  • Eligibility obtained by the March deadline allows students to start the internship on any date from February 1, and it also remains valid throughout the year.

In May of each academic year, students are invited to a presentation meeting at the University introducing the project internship program.

All students will automatically gain access to the “Stage di progetto” Blackboard page in May of their first year.

Further information and materials are available on the course’s Blackboard page.

Internship activation follows the procedure on the Step platform.

The project internship must be approved by the Area Contact Professor, through the assigned university tutor. Within the platform, one of the three tutors listed under points 1 and 2 must be indicated, not the Area Contact Professor.

The reference offices for internship activation are:

  • In Italy: Servizio Stage & Placement (stage-mi@unicatt.it)
  • Abroad: International Relations Office (wea@unicatt.it)

Internship Regulations 2025

·       Eligibility: Students self-assess their eligibility; in October and April, the list of eligible students is published on the Blackboard page Stage.

·       Internship project approval: Formally occurs when the formative plan is uploaded to the Step platform, indicating the university tutor for the internship.

·       Internship activation: Managed through the Step portal and requires approximately 15 days.

·       Internship activities: Carried out according to the approved training and guidance project.

·       Submission of final documentation: Sent after the internship ends.

·       Registration of internship grade: Students must sign up for the official registration session (Stage, Prof. Roberta Paroli).

Blackboard Stage

At the end of the internship, students must send the final documentation to both the Area Contact Professor and the university internship tutor, following the instructions on Blackboard Stage.

They must then register for the internship registration session (Stage, Prof. Roberta Paroli).

  1. Study plan – How can I include the internship in my study plan? In May, the university internship tutors will instruct the Student Services Office to include the internship in your study plan in place of one exam.
  2. Interruption of the internship – Can I interrupt my internship? Yes, but in that case, the internship ECTS credits will not be recognized, and you will need to take the corresponding exam included in your study plan.
  3. The internship project is not approved – Can I activate a curricular internship with ECTS? No. If the internship project is not approved, you must activate a non-credit-bearing internship.
  4. Company requires business trips – What should I do? Business trips must be communicated in advance to the Stage & Placement Service.
  5. Absences due to illness or exams/intermediate tests – Are they allowed? Yes, provided they are communicated and agreed upon with the company tutor.
