 (Exhausted Moon)

The suspended sculpture challenges the natural perception of iron as a heavy, static material. Its relationship with empty space becomes an integral part of the work: the form does not simply occupy space, but seems to depend upon it and upon the distance separating it from the ground. Suspension is therefore essential, transforming the sculpture into a presence that enters into direct dialogue with the surrounding architecture and with the void. Chafes has repeatedly installed this work in relation to pre-existing buildings and spaces, allowing the form to appear as an unexpected presence. The title associates the materiality of iron with a poetic, almost cosmic image—that of an “exhausted moon”—heightening the ambiguity between physical solidity and evocative fragility. This association is characteristic of the Portuguese sculptor’s practice, in which rigorously abstract forms are accompanied by words capable of evoking inner states, images, and existential conditions.
