The circle and the square belong to the fundamental vocabulary of geometric abstraction, but here Cass transforms them into the protagonists of a “love encounter”. The title invests the relationship between forms with an emotional quality that transcends the rigour of traditional geometry. Colour, transparency, and projection cause the figures to overlap and mutually transform one another: rather than presenting autonomous, static forms, the work stages a relationship. It is perhaps one of the clearest examples of Cass’s “sensitive geometry”, in which the language of Brazilian abstract-constructivist painting is reinterpreted through the body, perception, and the experience of encounter.
