The School of Specialization in Archaeological Heritage, active since the academic year 1997/98, is directed by Prof. Marco SANNAZARO. Professors from Università Cattolica and other universities, officials working in the Superintendences for Archaeological Heritage, and professionals in the sector are in charge of teaching.

The School aims to deepen the scientific preparation in the field of archaeological disciplines and to provide the professional skills useful for the protection, conservation and enhancement of the archaeological heritage.
The training includes an in-depth study of the disciplines and methodologies necessary for the study, enhancement and management of archaeological heritage.

Duration: 2 years

Curricula: Classical Archaeology and Late Antique and Medieval Archaeology

Organisation of courses
The didactic program includes lectures, participation in seminars and conferences, laboratory activities, exercises in archaeological areas.
Trainees must also carry out practical activities of excavation, reconnaissance, cataloguing of finds and, on request, can carry out internships at institutions affiliated with the School.
The courses are aimed only at postgraduate students and are not borrowed from other courses of the faculty. Classes, concentrated over one week a month, start in January and end in June.
Visits to areas of interest are planned throughout the year and, at the end of the course, a study trip is organized.
At the end of the training course, there will be the discussion of a specialization thesis that demonstrates scientific preparation, operational skills, and specific professionalism.

Qualifications and admission procedures
Access to the School is subject to a competition based on exams and qualifications. Graduates of Master's Degree Programmes, Master's Degree programmes in Archaeology or of the old system who have obtained a minimum of 90 ECTS in the subject areas of the characterising field are admitted.
The competition for admission to the School consists of:

  • a written test on a topic related to the general culture of the sector
  • an oral examination of recognition and commentary on originals or photographic reproductions of artefacts, monuments or archaeological sites.

Frequency
Attendance of at least 70% of the lessons related to each subject is compulsory.
Students may not enrol more than twice in the same year of the programme.
