What is the internship

An internship is a training experience in a company aimed at acquiring professional skillsInternships are optional. If certain requirements are met (duration, ECTS credits, etc.), an internship can replace one or more elective exams.

To start an internship, students must register in the Internship Register by filling in the form available in the Documents section of the Blackboard course and sending it to the Faculty Tutor. The registration is valid for one year and can be renewed.

To obtain ECTS credits, registration must be completed before the internship begins. If registration is not possible, the internship cannot be activated as a curricular internship with credits, but only as a curricular internship without credits.

Internships are not mandatory teaching activities. Therefore, the Faculty does not guarantee a number of internships equal to the number of requests received each year. Once the internship has been found, it must be approved by the Faculty Tutor by contacting them via email before it begins.

Internship activities correspond to:
- 5 ECTS for the MSc in Actuarial Sciences, Risk and Data Analysis.

For the internship to be recognized, the following conditions must be met:

  • minimum duration of 3 months;
  • the Faculty Tutor must be informed of all details before the internship begins;
  • the internship must be completed in line with the training project, unless it ends due to the student’s graduation;
  • at the end of the internship, the student must submit a final report.

Internships abroad can also be approved even if lasting less than three months, provided that:

  • the internship lasts at least four weeks;
  • it is carried out in a company with a solid reputation;
  • the host company has a public and competitive selection process;
  • the host company operates in the banking, financial or insurance sector, or is listed on regulated markets.

At the end of the internship, students must submit the Final Report, following the instructions provided in the Documents section of the Blackboard course. The report must be sent at least five weeks before the graduation session by email to the Faculty Tutor, specifying the elective exams to be replaced by the internship.

Final report (completed in the manner indicated in the Blackboard Course Documents section)

Once the internship is completed, students must submit the Final Report, following the instructions in Blackboard. The submission must take place at least five weeks before the graduation session by email to the Tutor, indicating the elective exams to be replaced by the internship.

The Student Office will then replace the chosen exams with the internship. Students must also register for the internship exam session (not for the replaced exam) in order to validate the ECTS. This exam session will take place at least two weeks before the graduation date.

Please note:

  • The internship is graded as “Approved” (no mark).
  • Registration for the internship exam session is mandatory for credit recognition.

1.      I found an internship and want to ask if it can be validated as a curricular internship with CFUs, what should I do?

First, you need to read this entire document and the faculty internship regulations. If the student is not already registered for internships, this step must be completed (see question 4).

When you want to request approval of the internship from the faculty tutor via email, it is requested that you do not send meager emails (e.g., “I found an internship, can it count for CFU recognition?”), but rather provide all the details of the internship (duration, location, company, how you found the internship, etc.) and specify degree course and year in which you are enrolled.

2.      During this academic year I want to do an internship, but I cannot select “Curricular Internship” in the Study Plan, what should I do?

It is not possible to select Curricular Internship in Study Plan. It is necessary to enter electives exams, which will be validated (according to the CFUs established in the regulations) at the end of the internship.

Students in the first year of the Master's Degree are advised to anticipate CFUs related to electives in the Study Plan.

3.      I would like to register for the internship. By when should I submit the necessary documents?

The School of Banking, Finance and Insurance has no such limitation. You may submit your application for admission to the roll at any time during the year, subject to the requirements prescribed in the Regulations.

4.      What is required for registration?

You are asked to mail the tutor the following documents:

A certificate of passed exams downloadable from blackboard assessing you are meeting the requirements set by the School:

The requirements are as follows:

Bachelor students:

  • students enrolled in the second year:
    • Must have passed all first-year exams;
    • Must have acquired at least 70 CFUs on the date of application for registration;
  • students enrolled in the third year:
    • Must have passed all the exams of the first year of the course;
    • Must have acquired at least 100 CFUs on the date of submission of the application for registration.

Master students:

  • At least 24 CFUs if you are in the second semester of the first MSc year
  • At least 40 CFUs if you are in the first semester of the second year
  • 56 CFUs in the other cases.

5.      I did a Curricular Internship during my Bachelor's Degree, which was completed at another university. Can I still register with the register?

Yes

6.      I cannot register for the internship since I do not meet the criteria. Can I still do an internship?

Whenever the registration is not possible, you cannot activate an internship in the form of a Curricular Internship with CFUs.

However, there is nothing prohibiting a Curricular Internship with zero CFUs. In this case, neither registration nor approval by the faculty tutor is required. To activate an internship of this type, however, it is possible to take advantage of the services offered by Internship and Placement, both as support for activation (mailing stage-mi@unicatt.it) and for searching for the internship through the portal step.unicatt.it.

7.      I have found an internship independently, do I still need to register?

In order to obtain CFUs, it is necessary to register before the internship begins.

If it is a company with which the Faculty has never activated Curricular Internships, the tutor will ask for some details in order to obtain the approval of the Referring Professor.

8.      I have taken enough exams to be able to register, but I haven't registered the exams yet. What can I do?

You can register for the internship. You are asked to indicate separately in the application such exams, the dates on which they were taken, and the name of the Professor.

9.      I am registered for the internship. How can I find an internship?

  • Through step.unicatt.it, the university portal aimed at linking students and firms. You can apply for internship following the instruction of announcements you are interested in.
  • Autonomously (e.g. LinkedIn, firms’ websites, etc). See question 7.

Besides that, it is also possible to join programs offered by UCSC International that involve doing an internship abroad. Again, in order to obtain CFUs, tutor approval is required prior to the start of the activities.

10.  If I am offered an internship, am I obliged to accept?

No
