The specialist in Paediatric Dentistry must have gained theoretical, scientific and professional knowledge relating to the physiology of growth, psychological, social and intellectual development of the subject in developmental age and to the pathophysiology, clinical, therapy and prevention of specialist odontostomatological diseases in paediatric age, including in subjects suffering from systemic diseases; in addition to pediatric odontostomatology, functional and instrumental semeiotics, pathophysiology, clinical and early interceptive therapy of malocclusions are specific areas of expertise.

For the School of Specialisation in PAEDIATRIC DENTISTRY (divided into a three-year course), the educational objectives are:

Basic learning objectives:
  • the deepening of knowledge in the biological and medical disciplines relating to the anatomy, physiology and pathophysiology of the dento-maxillofacial district, with particular reference to the development, growth, as well as the mechanisms of formative and morphological conditioning of the dento-maxillofacial complex and interactions with the soma;
  • the learning and acquisition of the ability to apply statistical and statistical-epidemiological methodologies.
Educational objectives of the type of School:
  • an exhaustive knowledge of clinical and instrumental diagnostics, pathophysiology and preventive and therapeutic aspects of the dento-maxillofacial district;
  • in-depth knowledge of dental semiotics, also making use of clinical and instrumental devices;
  • the identification of diagnostic pathways useful for framing the various types of pathologies of the stomatognathic system in developmental and adolescent age (pathologies of deciduous teeth, permanent and immature permanent teeth, periodontium, mucous membranes, bone bases, temporomandibular joint; alterations in the exchange and dento-skeletal alterations related to defective habits in deciduous and mixed dentition);
  • the acquisition of autonomy in the clinical management - including the behavioral management of the child - of the most common diseases in the pediatric dental specialist field, even in the presence of pathologies of general interest, and being able to recognize the cases that require referral to the specialist (ENT - Ophthalmology - Locomotor System - Dermatology - Infectious Diseases - Hematology - Diseases of the Respiratory System - Endocrinology - Gastroenterology - Child Neuropsychiatry - Diseases of the Cardiovascular System, etc.).

To this end, the Resident must have acquired satisfactory theoretical knowledge and professional competence in the recognition and treatment, even in emergency-urgency conditions, of the most common pathologies of the stomatognathic system;

  • the acquisition of specific skills on the prevention, interception and treatment of caries, periodontal, malocclusive and oral mucosal pathologies;
  • the acquisition of multidisciplinary approach skills between paediatric dentistry and the disciplines included in the scientific-disciplinary sector in which the type of Postgraduate School is integrated.
  • the deepening of knowledge on the loco-regional and systemic implications related to the treatment of pediatric patients suffering from diseases of other systems and organs including rare diseases.

Compulsory professional activities

The practical training activities of the residents take place in the University, Hospital and Territorial Structures of the Health Authorities, affiliated with the University.

The training of the resident must be aimed at pursuing the educational purposes of the type of School in Pediatric Dentistry and must provide for guided and assisted participation in all practical, clinical-diagnostic-therapeutic and preventive activities in the pediatric odontostomatological patient, with a specific and targeted learning also of laboratory procedures, as well as the use of instrumental aids. This participation must also be certified through the formal recording of attendance.

The professionalizing activities for the Specialization in Pediatric Dentistry are identified in the therapies of the specific pathologies declined in the characterizing objectives.

In particular, the aforementioned objectives can be considered satisfied if the resident, during the 3-year training course, performs the following interventions from the diagnostic phase to clinical recovery and under specific tutorial control:

  • 50 Outpatient and/or local paediatric dental examinations
  • 10 Clinical Management of the Pediatric Patient with Special Needs
  • 50 Diagnosis and Therapy in Pediatric Conservative Dentistry
  • 20 Diagnosis and Therapy in Endopedodontics
  • 10 Diagnosis and Therapy in Pediatric Oral Surgery
  • 10 Videat of Pediatric Oral Pathology
  • 20 Diagnosis and Therapy in Orthopedodontics

Related, integrative and interdisciplinary objectives:
  • deepening of knowledge of the fundamentals of pathologies related to alterations of the dento-maxillofacial district;
  • deepening of knowledge of the fundamentals of forensic medicine in its various aspects, including clinical bioethics;
  • deepening of knowledge on the aspects of professional responsibility related to clinical work, the inspiring principles of juvenile legislation and the professional duties related to it;
  • deepening of knowledge of the fundamentals in the field of health management;
  • deepening of knowledge of the legislative rules governing the health organization;
  • acquisition of knowledge regarding the organization of social and health services for children and adolescents and the principles underlying the management of health services and the planning of health-related interventions
  • acquisition of computer skills useful in particular in the management of diagnostic data and therapeutic planning;
  • deepening of knowledge of the English language to a level that allows the understanding of international literature and updating.

The student will be able to compete for the diploma after completing the professionalizing activities.

As part of the training course, the student will have to learn the scientific bases of the type of School in order to achieve full maturity and professional competence that includes an adequate ability to interpret scientific innovations and critical knowledge that allows him to consciously manage both assistance and his own updating; in this context, participation in meetings, congresses and the production of scientific publications and periods of attendance in qualified Italian and foreign institutions useful for his/her training may be envisaged.
