Mathematical, Physical and Natural Sciences

Dean: Prof. Claudio Giannetti

Those who choose to enrol in the Faculty of Mathematical, Physical and Natural Sciences are not satisfied with staying on the surface, but prefer to get to the bottom of things: the desire and passion to understand and deepen are the fundamental characteristics of this faculty and of those who choose to be part of it, embarking on a rather demanding path full of stimuli and opportunities.

Galileo said that "the universe is written in mathematical language". It is a wonderful mystery that makes mathematics the ideal tool for understanding the world

Niccolò Tartaglia, Quesiti, et inventioni diverse, 1546

Nothing in life is to be feared, it is only to be understood. Now is the time to understand more, so we can fear less

Marie Curie, Nobel Prize in Physics and Chemistry

Those who choose to enrol in the Faculty of Mathematical, Physical, Computer and Natural Sciences at Università Cattolica are not content with simply observing the world: they truly want to understand it, in depth, and embark on an exciting scientific journey. Curiosity, a passion for knowledge and a desire to see beyond appearances are the characteristics that distinguish our students.

The Faculty provides students with an international educational perspective and offers them the opportunity to study and conduct research at some of the best universities both in Europe and overseas.

The increasingly close connections with the worlds of research and work make this journey even more stimulating: it is designed for those who not only love numbers, formulas and theorems, but also want to understand – as Niccolò Tartaglia, the great 16th-century mathematician from Brescia, did –

that mathematics, physics and computer science can become a powerful tool for interpreting the reality that surrounds us.

Mathematics, physics and computer science are not just theoretical disciplines: since ancient times, they have contributed to human progress and, still today, they generate innovation and have practical applications in increasingly vast fields – from medicine to biology, from economics to environment protection – also thanks to the extraordinary advances in artificial intelligence. Studying these subjects at Università Cattolica means entering a cutting-edge research environment.

The Faculty hosts a Department and several Research Centres active in frontier research fields – from the environment to innovative nanostructured materials, from quantum technologies to mathematical modelling applied to business – thus offering the opportunity to combine theory and practice in a tangible and innovative way.

I believe that the contemporary university, while it has the duty to collaborate for the progress of the sciences and to follow the methodology required by each of them, must never put in second place what requires the recognition of its primacy, that is, man, the human person, the world of spirituality
