The School of Banking, Finance and Insurance Sciences of Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore promotes, in collaboration with the ANIA – Consumers Forum, the Grand Prix of Applied Mathematics competition as an opportunity to enhance the logical-mathematical skills of students in the last two years of secondary school, reward excellence and offer orientation to the post-diploma path.
The challenge proposes to the young participants to face and solve original and fun problems - designed by a technical-scientific commission made up of experts and teachers - which require the application of intuitive mathematical models to real life.
Now in its XXIII edition, the educational competition has involved tens of thousands of students over the years, offering them the opportunity to bring into play essential skills for their future and to get to the heart of university study choices in finance and insurance with solid prospects.
The Grand Prix takes place in three phases:
The heats | January 17, 2025
- The first round of the Grand Prix of Applied Mathematics will take place on January 17, 2025 at the schools registered for the race.
II heat | February 13, 2025
- The second round of the Grand Prix of Applied Mathematics will take place on Thursday afternoon, February 13, 2025 at the campuses of Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore in Milan, Brescia and Rome...
Final Event | March 29, 2025
- The final event of the Grand Prix of Applied Mathematics will take place on Saturday morning, March 29, 2025 in the Pius XI room of the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart of Milan, Largo Gemelli 1.
The course of the race
The first round of the Grand Prix of Applied Mathematics takes place every year at the schools registered for the race. The test, paper and individual, consists of 8 multiple-choice tests with 4 answer options and lasts 50′.
The texts of the test, together with the instructions for their administration and solutions, are sent by email to the teacher in charge in time to have them photocopied and distributed on the scheduled day to the students registered for the competition. In the case of many enrolled students/classes, the referring teacher may avail himself of the help of colleagues for the administration of tests and their correction.
Once the correction has been made, the reference teacher sends to the Organizing Secretariat of the Grand Prix of Applied Mathematics an excel table with the ranking of the first 10 students with relative scores achieved (only the first 5 will be selected for the second round or, in their absence, the following ones).
The second round of the Grand Prix of Applied Mathematics takes place every year at the campuses of Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore in Milan, Brescia and Rome and involves the best 5 students of the institutes participating in the first round.
The test, paper and individual, is structured in 3 open-ended questions and 5 multiple-choice tests with 4 answer options and lasts 60′.
- Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore of Milan, Largo Gemelli 1
- Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore di Brescia, Via della Garzetta, 48
- Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore di Roma, Largo Francesco Vito 1
The final event of the Grand Prix of Applied Mathematics takes place in the Pius XI room of the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart of Milan, Largo Gemelli 1.
The event features 3 key moments:
- a lecture show on mathematical and insurance issues by TAXI 1729, a scientific dissemination company
- a post-diploma orientation meeting by UNICATT professors and representatives of the financial-insurance world, in which the courses of study and professional opportunities for those undertaking university courses with a mathematical, statistical or financial focus are illustrated
- the award ceremony of the 3 national winners and the next 20 best classified who receive technological devices as a prize. Prizes will also be awarded to the teachers of the winning students.

Enrollment
The Grand Prix of Applied Mathematics is reserved for students in the last two years of national, state and non-state secondary schools of any type.
Registration for the competition is the responsibility of the reference teacher of the school and must be made to participate in the XXIII edition BY 13 JANUARY 2025, by filling out the appropriate registration form and sending it to the address: gpmatematica.applicata@unicatt.it
Registration does not require any financial contribution to the participating schools; Travel expenses are the responsibility of the schools.
All communications relating to the instructions and methods of carrying out each phase of the competition will be sent to the lecturer in charge.
It is possible and desirable to involve as many classes as possible of the institute or even groups of students from various classes: the primary objective of the competition is in fact to make students grasp the usefulness of the mathematical tools they acquire in class and, only in the second round, to identify the most intuitive and capable students in applying them.
