The educational offer of Psychology at Università Cattolica has a long history that began with the pioneering experiences of Father Agostino Gemelli, founder of the University. His Psychology Laboratory, launched at the beginning of the last century, contributed decisively to the progress of Italian psychology.

Our Faculty is the product of a long-established tradition. It has inherited an extraordinary legacy: the concept of a broad culture encompassing a wide range of disciplines, from medicine to philosophy, which enables us to ask the right questions in our pursuit of knowledge. This is the driving force behind our Faculty: the remarkable collaboration between scholars and across different fields of knowledge, which has led to the development of an ambitious, long-term project in which students have always played, and continue to play, a central role.
Eugenia Scabini, First Dean of the Faculty of Psychology (Ad fontes, 2011)
The Laboratory of Psychology (1924), the School of Specialization in Occupational Psychology (1955), the Institute of Psychology (1958), the School of Specialization in Psychology (1964), the Department of Psychology (1983), the Degree Course in Psychology (1993), the Graduate School of Psychology Agostino Gemelli – ASAG (2001), the Doctoral School in Psychology (2004), the system of Graduate Schools qualifying students to practice as psychotherapist (2020) are the important milestones of this journey.
The Faculty of Psychology, founded in 1999, has rapidly gained a top position in the academic world and in quality assessment rankings, placing internationally among the top one hundred and fifty universities worldwide and ranking fourth in Italy (source: QS World University Ranking, 2024). At national level, it consistently performs above the average for psychology programmes offered by Italian universities (sources: Academic University and Alma Laurea Evaluation Committee).
In tune with its history and its commitment to bringing its values into the present, the Faculty adopts and promotes a vision of psychology that:
- focuses on the individual and to the contexts in which people live;
- is grounded in the progress of the most qualified and up-to-date scientific research at international level;
- is open to dialogue with other related sciences;
- embraces a plurality of schools of thought and the theoretical and methodological approaches within the discipline;
- recognises the potential of psychological knowledge for practical application and intervention.
Following the introduction of the Qualifying Degree in Psychology, the Faculty has reviewed all the proposed degree programmes drawing on the wealth of experience gained so far while looking ahead to the scientific, cultural and professional scenarios that will shape the development of psychology in the years to come.
I believe that the contemporary university, while it has the duty to contribute to the advancement of the sciences and to follow the methodology required by each of them, must never put in second place what is required for the recognition of its primacy, namely man, the human person, the world of spirituality.
