FACULTY DEAN

Andrea Canova

At Università Cattolica, history, philosophy, classical and modern literature, archaeology and art history are not confined to the study of the past. Rather, they bring into the present and the future the great humanistic tradition embodied in the Faculty of Arts and Philosophy, whose roots lie deep in the medieval university system from which European culture emerged.

In line with its identity, alongside its commitment to providing future researchers and teachers with a solid and rigorous education, the Faculty combines this tradition with new areas of knowledge. Their interaction gives rise to new cultural perspectives, with valuable outcomes for future career opportunities as well.

In line with its identity, the Faculty today embraces the new challenges of knowledge, drawing on the values of the humanistic tradition and well-established tools for critical thinking to address the contemporary world.

In response to the restructuring of three-year undergraduate and two-year graduate degree programmes, the Faculty has introduced seven degree programmes, offered at the Milan campus, the Brescia campus, both campuses, or in collaboration with other Faculties as interfaculty programmes.

The Faculty of Arts and Philosophy also offers graduate degree programmes, some in collaboration with other Faculties of Università Cattolica. These programmes give graduates of three-year undergraduate degree programmes—which already have a strong professional focus—the opportunity to further develop their knowledge and skills in preparation for higher-level roles in different areas of society.

Sectors such as the publishing industry and the promotion of cultural heritage show, for example, that the humanities and the new frontiers of technology and communication are no longer separate, parallel worlds. Preparing people who are equipped to meet challenges of this scale requires a broad and solid education, a wide-ranging cultural background and a historical perspective.

The Faculty's academic offerings spans literary sciences (classical and modern), philosophical, historical, artistic and archaeological sciences, communication sciences, cultural heritage and the performing arts (DAMS in Brescia), as well as content management, tourism, with a particular focus on cultural tourism.

I believe that the contemporary university, while it has the duty to contribute to the advancement of the sciences and to follow the methodology required by each of them, must never put in second place what is required for the recognition of its primacy, namely man, the human person, the world of spirituality.

Father Agostino Gemelli, Founder of Università Cattolica
