Study plan

Basic learning objectives: the student must acquire:

a) the knowledge of the physical and cognitive bodily functions underlying the interaction between person and environment, through the study of both the former and the latter, in a direct form and through the study of the related basic and biomedical sciences: and this, under both normal and pathological conditions;

b) knowledge of the procedures of diagnosis, prognosis and therapy specific to conditions of intracorporeal functional alteration or of the person, the latter framed as described by the World Health Organization under the umbrella term of disability and articulated in impairment, limitation of the person's activities and restriction of social participation;

c) acquire in-depth knowledge of functional anatomy, biomechanics and kinesiology, psychology and neuropsychology, in normal and pathological conditions, as well as the elements of pathophysiology of conditions that can determine or aggravate functional alterations within the body or of the person, also in consideration of the specificity that age introduces into diagnosis, therapy and the need for social integration;

d) acquire the physical and biological bases and application techniques of the specific diagnostic and therapeutic means of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine, according to non- or semi-invasive methods and methods that use advanced technologies;

e) know, in addition to the indications and general therapeutic effects of pharmacological treatments, their specific interaction with disability;

f) acquire the methodological and applicative bases of the measures of human behavior, as it manifests itself with both physical and cognitive functions, and this using both technological-instrumental and psychometric techniques;

g) know the main regulatory and organisational aspects and the main management methodologies of health and social health services, as well as the fundamental principles and methods of communication, information and training in the health and scientific fields, including the main methods of media communication through computer means;

h) know the main research methodologies, both quantitative and qualitative, that are used in the field of physical medicine and rehabilitation, with particular regard to the specific techniques of experimental design and statistics;

i) acquire specific skills in the assessment and treatment of acute and chronic somatic pain conditions, with particular regard to the therapeutic possibilities offered by physical means and exercise;

l) acquire skills in the general clinical management of conditions of disability associated with surgical after-effects or pathologies in the neurological or internal medicine area, with particular regard to disability sustained by chronic or evolutionary pathologies;

m) acquire knowledge on the epidemiology of disability, on the health and social planning and organization of Rehabilitation, with particular regard to the organization of welfare services aimed at family, school-training, and work integration.

Educational objectives of the type of School: the student must actively contribute to the definition of measures useful for preventing or reducing the personal and social, biological, behavioral, relational and economic consequences of disability through specific skills in the following activities: - global approach to the patient (functional-holistic approach) according to the biopsychosocial model also inspired by the ICF International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF). - transdisciplinary and interprofessional working method (teamwork) centered on the patient and oriented towards the solution of problems and the reintegration of the person with disabilities in his environment and in society through the recovery of skills and participatory capacity - aptitude for a leading role in the formulation of individual and structural rehabilitation projects and programs. - aptitude for study and research on biological mechanisms that underlie functional recovery and prevention of further related disabilities. - specific attention to the recovery of self-sufficiency through the appropriate use of orthoses, prostheses, aids and all advanced technologies for exercise and environmental control - ability to actively involve the patient, educate family members and caregivers and collaborate in social integration, knowing how to consider the role of architectural barriers, housing context, ability to use means of transport and communication, all in the contexts of inclusiveness also through the use of community resources.

Related or integrative objectives: the student must know the most frequent causes of disability in order to be able to arrive, considering the pathology of the organ or apparatus but opening his gaze to their impact on the person's behavior, to a specific functional diagnosis, to the formulation of a prognosis of recovery, and to the coherent setting of rehabilitation projects (definition of final objectives) and rehabilitation programs (definition of methods and intermediate objectives). The student must also be able to evaluate, for the purposes of decision-making, the specialist results of the instrumental diagnostic techniques most frequently required in rehabilitation pathways, such as: clinical biochemistry examinations, conventional and computed tomographic radiodiagnostic examinations, nuclear magnetic resonance examinations, nuclear medicine examinations, neurophysiological examinations, ultrasound examinations. He must also be able to evaluate, for the purposes of decisions of competence, the specialized results of the main neuropsychological and psychological-behavioral tests. The following are compulsory professionalizing activities to achieve the educational purposes of the type: carry out six months of internship in Departments, Operating Units or specialized Services: Orthopedics and Traumatology (1 month), Neurology (1 month), Cardiology (1 month), Pneumatology (1 month), Emergency Department (1 month) Department of Territorial Activities or equivalent (1 month). Participate in specialized medical acts, conducted at least 50% in person, as indicated below: - functional diagnostics with instrumental measures such as: (Dynamometry, Electrokinesiology, Postural and baropodometric tests, Gait analysis, Spirometry, Urodynamics, etc.) at least 40 in total - functional diagnostics with psychometric measures such as: Myo-articular balances, Neuropsychological tests, Quantitative questionnaires (scales) of Functional Assessment, structured check-lists (including ICF questionnaires): at least 100 in total; - biomedical diagnostics with quantitative or semi-quantitative instrumental measures such as: neurophysiological, ultrasound, osteo-densitometric instrumental examinations: instrumental rehabilitation: at least 40 in total; - active participation in the multi-professional team for the definition of Individual Rehabilitation Projects and Programs (setting, control, verification) in both inpatient and outpatient settings, and/or residential care, and/or territorial/home care and in the areas of different ages. This activity must be directed to a total number of subjects not less than 200 in total. - prescription and testing of prostheses, orthoses and aids: at least 30 in total. - minimal- or semi-invasive interventions carried out personally and individually (such as manual medicine procedures, laryngo-tracheal fibroscopies, joint infiltrations and in general interventional physiatry procedures in its various forms) at least 50 in total.

The student will be able to compete for the diploma after completing the professionalizing activities. As part of the training course, the student will have to learn the scientific bases of the type of School in order to achieve full maturity and professional competence that includes an adequate ability to interpret scientific innovations and critical knowledge that allows him to consciously manage both assistance and his own updating; In this context, participation in meetings, congresses and the production of scientific publications and periods of attendance in qualified Italian and foreign institutions useful for his/her training may be envisaged.
