The specialist in Oral Surgery must have gained theoretical, scientific and professional knowledge in the field of pathophysiology, histopathology, clinical and therapy of odontostomatological alterations of surgical interest and in the surgical-rehabilitation treatment of total and partial edentulism; Specific areas of expertise include the histopathology of phylogistic, dysplastic and neoplastic dento-maxillofacial alterations, the pathophysiology of bone atrophy of the jaws, physical and instrumental semeiotics, clinical methodology and surgical therapy.

Basic learning objectives:

- the deepening of knowledge in the biological and medical disciplines relating to physiology, histology, pathology, pathological and topographical anatomy of the dento-maxillofacial district and pharmacotherapy, with particular reference to odontostomatological alterations of a phlogistic, dysplastic and neoplastic nature and their interrelations with systemic diseases and treatments;
- the learning and acquisition of the application skills of statistical and statistical-epidemiological methodologies.

Educational objectives of the type of School:

- an exhaustive knowledge of clinical and instrumental diagnostics and basic surgical techniques;
- in-depth knowledge of odontostomatology, physical and instrumental surgical semeiotics;
- the identification of diagnostic pathways useful for framing the various odontostomatological pathologies of surgical interest and the various types of edentulism;
- the acquisition of specific skills in the execution of local anesthesia techniques, with conscious sedation and with sedo-analgesia;
- in-depth knowledge of general anesthesia and first aid techniques, as well as emergency treatment;
- the pursuit of targeted preparation in individual oral surgery procedures and in the treatment of odontostomatological pathologies of surgical interest and total or partial edentulism;
- the acquisition of specific skills on the prevention and interception of odontostomatological pathologies of surgical interest, with particular reference to phlogistic, dysplastic, neoplastic, orthodontic, pre-prosthetic ones;
- the acquisition of multidisciplinary approach skills between oral surgery and the various disciplines included in the scientific-disciplinary sector in which the type of Postgraduate School is integrated;
- the deepening of knowledge on the loco-regional and systemic implications related to the oral surgical treatment of patients suffering from diseases of other systems and organs, including rare diseases.

The following are compulsory professionalizing activities to achieve the purposes of the typology:

The practical training activities of the trainees take place in the University, Hospital and Territorial Structures of the Health Authorities, which have an agreement with the University.
The training of the resident must be aimed at pursuing the educational purposes of the type of School in Oral Surgery and must provide for guided and assisted participation in all the practical, clinical-diagnostic-therapeutic activities of the various branches of oral surgery. This participation must also be certified through the formal recording of attendance.
The professionalizing activities for the Specialization in Oral Surgery are identified in the therapies of the specific pathologies declined in the characterizing objectives.
In particular, the aforementioned objectives can be considered satisfied if the resident, during the 3-year training course, performs, from the diagnostic phase to clinical recovery and under specific tutorial control, the following interventions:

  • 200 simple and complex non-surgical extractions;
  • 150 exodontic surgeries;
  • 15 operations for cystic pathologies of the jaws;
  • 30 biopsies and/or operations for the removal of benign and malignant neoplasms;
  • 5 root surgeries;
  • 15 orthodontic surgeries;
  • 10 implant surgeries;
  • 12 pre-prosthetic surgeries;
  • 15 periodontal surgeries;
  • 15 oral surgeries

The following are similar, integrative and interdisciplinary objectives:

- deepening of knowledge of the fundamentals of pathologies related to alterations of the dento-maxillofacial district;
- deepening of knowledge of the fundamentals of forensic medicine in its various aspects, including clinical bioethics;
- deepening of knowledge of the fundamentals in the field of health management;
- deepening of knowledge of the legislative rules governing the health organization;
- deepening of the knowledge of the English language to a level that allows the understanding of international literature and updating;
- acquisition of computer skills useful in particular in the management of diagnostic data and therapeutic planning

Integrated training objectives (i.e. common core):

the student must have acquired doctrinal knowledge in the field of the general disciplines that contribute to the training of specialists in Oral Surgery, Orthodontics and Pediatric Dentistry and of the disciplines characterizing the clinical-diagnostic aspects of emergencies and first aid

The student will be able to compete for the diploma after completing the professionalizing activities.
As part of the training course, the student will have to learn the scientific bases of the type of School in order to achieve full maturity and professional competence that includes an adequate ability to interpret scientific innovations and critical knowledge that allows him to consciously manage both assistance and his own updating; In this context, participation in meetings, congresses and the production of scientific publications and periods of attendance in qualified Italian and foreign institutions useful for his/her training may be envisaged
