/ Overview

The three-year degree course in Ostetricia (Obstetrics) trains health professionals able to assist women, newborns, couples and families during pregnancy, childbirth, postpartum and in the different stages of reproductive life, integrating clinical, preventive, educational, organisational and relational skills.

The programme is inspired by the principles of Midwifery and promotes the development of clinical reasoning, critical thinking and professional autonomy through progressive training, based on the latest scientific evidence and the best standards of care.

A distinctive element of the course is the close integration between teaching and clinical practice: the internship takes place mainly at the Fondazione Policlinico Universitario "A. Gemelli" IRCCS, offering students the opportunity to deal with a context of national excellence in care, research and training.

Theoretical lessons, workshops, high-fidelity simulations, research activities and internships are integrated into a path that prepares competent midwives and obstetricians, capable of offering personalized, safe care based on Evidence Based Midwifery and Evidence Based Practice.

/ Admission

The admission process

Access to the three-year degree programme in Ostetricia has a limited number of students and is subject to passing the admission test for the courses of the Health Professions. To participate, it is necessary to have a secondary school diploma or a foreign qualification recognised as suitable and to submit the application for admission within the procedures and deadlines indicated annually in the competition notice.

The ranking list is defined on the basis of the outcome of the admission test and the criteria set out in the call for applications. Candidates who have been successfully placed can then complete their enrolment within the deadlines set by the University.

Rankings and notices

From 18 May until 11:59 p.m. on 1 September 2026 , it is possible to register for the admission test by paying the participation fee ( €130.00). The payment - to be made by 1 September 2026 - constitutes the completion of the registration without which it is not possible to take the exam.

The admission tests are held remotely ( home-based mode) on Friday 11 and Saturday 12 September 2026 at 2:30 pm.

When registering for the test, each candidate selects the session they wish to participate in, subject to availability of places.

When enrolling, it is possible to indicate up to 2 undergraduate degree programmes among those on offer of the Faculty of Medicine for the academic year 2026/27 (art. 1 of the call, table below) specifying the order of preference (first choice and, if applicable, second choice) with the exception of the courses active at the Claudiana teaching centre in Bolzano, for which it is necessary to consult the https://www.claudiana.bz.it/it website.

The chosen degree programmes and the order of preference can be changed by 1 September 2026 by using the "modify competition registration" function of your enrolment profile.

Preferences and the order of preference are binding in the preparation of the merit rankings, therefore a careful reading of art. 10 of the competition notice.

The final rankings of each degree programme will be drawn up taking into consideration as a matter of priority:

1) the choices and the order of preference expressed by each candidate (first and second choice);

2) the score obtained.

Therefore, each ranking will be composed first of all of the candidates who have indicated the degree course as "first choice" ordered on the basis of merit, and then of those who have indicated the course as "second choice" in turn ordered on the basis of merit.

The following criteria will be observed in the allocation of places:

  • if the candidate is admitted to the course indicated as the first choice (priority 1), the second choice, if expressed, is automatically cancelled (and eliminated from the corresponding ranking);
  • if the candidate is admitted to the programme-campus indicated as second choice (priority 2), the first choice remains valid and the candidate retains his or her place in the ranking list for possible scrolling (even if he/she enrols in the degree programme indicated as second choice);
  • if the candidate is NOT admitted to the first choice course nor, if expressed, to the second choice one, he or she is placed in the ranking list for both of which he or she may be asked to enrol by subsequent scrolling.

In any case , the order of preference is preserved

How the admission test takes place

The exam is delivered REMOTELY (via online web testing platform with remote control system).

It is essential to have:

  • A PC (Windows 8 operating system, or later, or LINUX) or MAC (MAC-OS 10.14 or later) equipped with a webcam and microphone;

The tablet can ONLY be used as a replacement for the Smartphone, not the PC/Mac

The test consists of 60 multiple-choice questions (max 60 points) distributed as follows:

  • 20 logical reasoning questions;
  • 30 questions on scientific culture: 10 on chemistry, 10 on biology, 5 on physics and 5 on mathematics (with elements of logic);
  • 5 general culture questions;
  • 5 questions of ethical-religious culture.

At the end of the exam, each candidate must answer further 8 questions in 8 minutes (so-called "reserve questions"), one for each subject, automatically assigned by the platform.

  • The "reserve" questions do not contribute to the determination of the final score;
  • they will be used only in the event that an anomaly emerges in one or more questions of the test that leads to their cancellation, replacing only the one relating to the same subject.

The test lasts 60 minutes

  • By paying the test participation fee, the candidate can access the online simulation platform made available by the University free of charge and unlimitedly :
  • Access the registration profile;

Internships and career opportunities

The Faculty offers several internship and apprenticeship opportunities, allowing students to apply the skills acquired in concrete work contexts.

Internships and vocational training

The internship represents one of the central elements of the three-year degree programme in Ostetricia and accompanies students on a path of progressive professional growth, aimed at developing the clinical, relational and organisational skills required by the midwifery profession. The activities are carried out under the supervision of clinical and educational tutors, encouraging a gradual assumption of autonomy and responsibility.

The internship experiences take place in a network of excellent care facilities, including the "A. Gemelli" University Hospital Foundation IRCCS, the Gemelli Isola and the Counseling Centers of the ASL Roma 2.

At the end of each academic year, the skills acquired are assessed through an internship exam that includes the tutors' evaluations, elaborations on clinical cases and a practical test with simulation of care settings in the obstetric, gynecological and neonatal areas, ensuring a complete verification of the professional preparation achieved.

Internship in a nutshell

Compulsory: expected to start from the second semester of the first year and divided into activities of increasing complexity

  • Where it takes place: Fondazione Policlinico Universitario "A. Gemelli" IRCCS, Gemelli Isola and Consultors of the ASL Roma 2

  • Areas of expertise: delivery room, obstetrics and nursery, obstetric pathology, obstetric emergency room, gynecology, prenatal diagnostics, neonatal intensive care, specialist clinics and community services

  • Dedicated tutoring: each student is supported by clinical and educational tutors who accompany the learning path and the progressive acquisition of professional autonomy

  • Evaluation: at the end of each academic year there is an internship exam based on tutor evaluations, analysis of clinical cases and practical simulation tests

The Career Service supports students and graduates as they prepare to enter the job market, providing career guidance and resources to help them navigate different professional and organisational contexts. It supports the development of transversal skills, creates opportunities to meet employers and helps students develop an informed and coherent career path.

Every year, more than 20,000 students take part in events organised with over 100 partner companies, and more than 9,500 undertake an internship with support from the Career Service and internship tutors.

  • Graduate degrees: continuation of studies with the graduate degree in Nursing and Midwifery Sciences and, from 2026, with the graduate degree in Midwifery Sciences, to deepen the areas of training, health management, service organisation, research and professional leadership

  • First level Master's degree: specialisation courses in areas such as management and coordination of health professions, pelvic health and pelvic floor rehabilitation, territorial assistance and taking care of women and families

  • PhD: access, after obtaining the graduate degree, to paths dedicated to academic research and innovation in the obstetrics and healthcare field

The focus on research methodology and evidence-based practice provides a solid basis for successfully addressing the subsequent levels of university education and contributing to the development of the discipline of midwifery.
