Dr. Michele GROSSI, CERN Quantum Technology Initiative
Abstract
High energy physics pushes classical computing to its limits, from precision calculations in perturbation theory to strongly coupled, real-time problems that remain out of reach. Within its Quantum Technology Initiative, CERN is assessing how quantum technologies can address these long-term needs.
In this seminar I will discuss the role of quantum computing in HEP, from perturbative regimes (amplitude calculations, phase-space integration, sampling) to non-perturbative problems (real-time dynamics, lattice gauge theories) where classical methods face the sign problem and exponential Hilbert-space growth. After a brief introduction to the promise of quantum technologies, I will present the main classes of quantum algorithms relevant to these tasks, including Hamiltonian simulation and quantum machine learning, and assess their resource requirements and expected computational impact, near-term and fault-tolerant. I will conclude with open challenges and the research directions pursued by our group at CERN
