/ Overview

The three-year degree course in Ortottica ed assistenza oftalmologica (Orthoptic and Ophtalmologic Assistance) trains professionals specialised in the prevention, evaluation, rehabilitation and treatment of vision disorders and ocular motility. The programme integrates a solid scientific preparation with practical and clinical activities, allowing students to develop the skills necessary to work in the ophthalmological field from the earliest years.

The teaching combines theoretical lessons, workshops, simulations and internship activities, promoting progressive learning closely linked to professional practice. Students become familiar with the main diagnostic and rehabilitation techniques and with the use of technologies used in the assessment of visual function and alterations in ocular motility.

Particular attention is also paid to the development of transversal skills, such as communication with the patient, collaboration within multidisciplinary teams and the critical approach to scientific literature, fundamental elements for evidence-based professional practice.

Thanks to the close integration between university training and clinical activity, the programme prepares orthoptists and ophthalmology assistants able to meet the needs of modern health services, combining technical skills, professional autonomy and attention to the quality of care.

/ Admission

The admission process

Access to the three-year degree programme in Ortottica ed assistenza oftalmologica has a limited number of students and is subject to passing the admission test provided for the programmes of the Health Professions. To participate, it is necessary to have a secondary school diploma or a foreign qualification recognized as suitable and to submit the application for admission according to the procedures and deadlines indicated annually in the announcement.

The ranking is drawn up on the basis of the outcome of the admission test and the criteria set out in the call for applications. Admitted candidates can then complete their enrolment within the deadlines set by the University.

Rankings and notices

From 18 May until 11:59 p.m. on 1 September 2026 , it is possible to register for the admission test by paying the participation fee ( €130.00). The payment - to be made by 1 September 2026 - constitutes the completion of the registration without which it is not possible to take the exam.

The admission tests are held remotely ( home-based mode) on Friday 11 and Saturday 12 September 2026 at 2:30 pm.

When registering for the test, each candidate selects the session they wish to participate in, subject to availability of places.

When enrolling, it is possible to indicate up to 2 undergraduate degree programmes among those on offer of the Faculty of Medicine for the academic year 2026/27 (art. 1 of the call, table below) specifying the order of preference (first choice and, if applicable, second choice) with the exception of the courses active at the Claudiana teaching centre in Bolzano, for which it is necessary to consult the https://www.claudiana.bz.it/it website.

The chosen degree programmes and the order of preference can be changed by 1 September 2026 by using the "modify competition registration" function of your enrolment profile.

Preferences and the order of preference are binding in the preparation of the merit rankings, therefore a careful reading of art. 10 of the competition notice.

The final rankings of each degree programme will be drawn up taking into consideration as a matter of priority:

1) the choices and the order of preference expressed by each candidate (first and second choice);

2) the score obtained.

Therefore, each ranking will be composed first of all of the candidates who have indicated the degree course as "first choice" ordered on the basis of merit, and then of those who have indicated the course as "second choice" in turn ordered on the basis of merit.

The following criteria will be observed in the allocation of places:

  • if the candidate is admitted to the course indicated as the first choice (priority 1), the second choice, if expressed, is automatically cancelled (and eliminated from the corresponding ranking);
  • if the candidate is admitted to the programme-campus indicated as second choice (priority 2), the first choice remains valid and the candidate retains his or her place in the ranking list for possible scrolling (even if he/she enrols in the degree programme indicated as second choice);
  • if the candidate is NOT admitted to the first choice course nor, if expressed, to the second choice one, he or she is placed in the ranking list for both of which he or she may be asked to enrol by subsequent scrolling.

In any case , the order of preference is preserved

How the admission test takes place

The exam is delivered REMOTELY (via online web testing platform with remote control system).

It is essential to have:

At the end of the exam, each candidate must answer further 8 questions in 8 minutes (so-called "reserve questions"), one for each subject, automatically assigned by the platform.

  • The "reserve" questions do not contribute to the determination of the final score;
  • they will be used only in the event that an anomaly emerges in one or more questions of the test that leads to their cancellation, replacing only the one relating to the same subject.

The test lasts 60 minutes

Internships and vocational training

The internship represents one of the central elements of the three-year degree course in Orthoptic and Ophtalmologic Assistance and is integrated into the training course from the first year. The professionalizing activities allow students to progressively apply the knowledge acquired, developing technical, relational and organizational skills directly in care contexts.

The practical experience takes place at the Fondazione Policlinico Universitario "A. Gemelli" IRCCS, under the guidance of qualified tutors, offering the opportunity to deal with all the main areas of orthoptic and ophthalmological assistance, from instrumental diagnostics to visual rehabilitation and assistance in the surgical field.

The internship is recognized with training credits and accompanies students throughout their studies, promoting a gradual insertion into the profession and facilitating the transition from the university to the work context.

The Career Service supports students and graduates as they prepare to enter the job market, providing career guidance and resources to help them navigate different professional and organisational contexts. It supports the development of transversal skills, creates opportunities to meet employers and helps students develop an informed and coherent career path.

Every year, more than 20,000 students take part in events organised with over 100 partner companies, and more than 9,500 undertake an internship with support from the Career Service and internship tutors.
