Environmental installation

GIAN MARIA TOSATTI

 (Breath)

The environmental installation Respiro, conceived for the University's upper ambulatory, takes the form of an almost intangible intervention within a historically significant space overlooking one of the Bramante cloisters. With this work, Gian Maria Tosatti continues his exploration of space as a place in which history leaves its traces, even when they are not immediately visible. Rather than introducing an autonomous object into the corridor, the intervention almost imperceptibly alters the existing environment: the light is dimmed, sounds are muffled, and the perception of the space shifts. This approach is characteristic of Tosatti's practice, in which installations often function as devices capable of bringing to the surface the memory and symbolic dimension of a place. In Respiro, this invisible presence takes on a tangible form through the slow dripping of synthetic blood from the ventilation grille. The blood thus becomes the trace of something flowing through the building "beneath its skin": an image that is at once physical and spiritual, suggesting the persistence of history and its wounds in the present. Particularly significant is the fact that all this takes place without interrupting the daily life of the University: students, faculty, and visitors continue to move through the corridor, while the work introduces, almost silently, an unsettling element into the ordinary.
