RUI CHAFES

(I Want Everything from You)

Heavy yet seemingly immaterial, Chafes's Iron sculpture takes on the quality of an organic presence, suspended between body and abstraction. The fluid and sinuous forms of the work suggest a living presence reaching towards another body.

The dark mass of iron rises vertically through a continuous movement of curves, contractions, and expansions. The sculpture thus appears at once heavy and dynamic, compact yet animated by an organic energy. Chafes transforms iron, a hard and resistant material, into forms that seem to evoke the body or the vegetal world, without ever becoming ecognizable images.

Unlike stone sculpture, where form is achieved "by subtraction", here it emerges through a constructive process "from nothing", which plays a fundamental role in the artist's practice. At the same time, however, Chafes tends to diminish our perception of this process, systematically concealing the physical traces of his work through the application of black or grey paint. Through such interventions, he directs our attention towards the intermediate space between the work and our perception of it, and it is precisely here that a sense of disorientation arises. The title introduces a strong relational dimension into the abstract form, turning the sculpture into a presence that seems to address another body directly.
