To speak of a dream is also to speak of the birth of psychoanalysis, which took place at a painful moment in Freud's life. The death of his father, on the one hand, and the difficulties he encountered in presenting to Viennese psychiatrists what he had heard in Paris, on the other, seem to shake his determination to discover the ways in which the unconscious manifests itself. Because that's what it's all about: affirming that there is a part of our mind that escapes the control of the ego, but at the same time sustaining a substantial continuity of mental life. And today? Is the dream still an essential object of psychodynamically oriented work with the patient? Is it still a dream being interpreted? And above all: what has been the contribution of neuroscience to the study and understanding of dream activity?
These and other open questions will be addressed in the workshop that inaugurates the new academic year of the School of Specialization in Clinical Psychology of Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore. It will be Vittorio Lingiardi, author of a recent essay on dream life (L'ombelico del sogno. A Dreamlike Journey, Einaudi, 2023), to guide us.
