White Coat Ceremony: Doctors in English Enter the Ward

"May I always act so as to preserve the finest traditions of my calling and may I long experience the joy of healing those who seek my help": all the emotion of Dr Federica Giordano, Alumna of the Class of 2019, was felt and shared as she recited the Hippocratic Oath, the central and solemn part of the White Coat Ceremony of the integrated programme in Medicine and Surgery held on 4 October in the Auditorium of the Rome campus of Università Cattolica.

It is the first White Coat Ceremony of the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery, different from those in North America where - since the first one in 1993 at the College of Physicians and Surgeons of the Columbia University - it corresponds to the beginning of the School of Medicine. It represents a rite of passage between the end of the third and the beginning of the fourth year: with this 'initiation', future doctors enter the phase of clinical studies that will complete their training over the next three years.

The event opened with institutional greetings by Professor Pier Sandro Cocconcelli, Pro-Rector delegate for the coordination of internationalisation projects, Professor Rocco Bellantone, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery at Università Cattolica, Professor Marco Elefanti, General Director of the Fondazione Policlinico Universitario Agostino Gemelli IRCCS, and Professor Giovanni Gambassi, coordinator of the degree programme in Medicine and Surgery. Students enrolled in the fifth year also took part in the ceremony, along with the students of the first three years of the programme and their families, receiving their coats in this first ceremony, together with the university community of the Rome Campus and its director Dr. Lorenzo Cecchi.

After the ceremony, each student received, with great emotion, the lab coat with their name on it, and listened, after the solemn 'dressing up', to the Keynote Speech by Professor Andrea Bacigalupo, former Full Professor of Haematology at Università Cattolica and President of the Ethics Committee of the Fondazione Policlinico Universitario Agostino Gemelli IRCCS.

From knowledge to knowing how and to knowing how to be, the students of the fourth year of the degree programme in Medicine and Surgery have crossed an ideal 'bridge'. From now on, they will not only deal with the disease, but will also actually be beside their patients, in the most important phase for future doctors: that of science, compassion, caring by taking care.
