Abstract
Let's imagine that we are in a context characterized by strong linguistic and cultural heterogeneity. What can be the role of mathematics in these contexts?
This is one of the main questions that guided an informal mathematics education path of the METHEXIS research project. The activities, based on problem-solving, aim to develop transferable skills and psychological empowerment processes in fragile contexts.
The seminar will present some examples of laboratory activities and the main results that emerged, including an increase in personal self-regulation, self-esteem and cognitive engagement.
METHEXIS is a social mathematics project of the Politecnico di Milano, funded by the Polisocial Award 2023 and 2024, developed in the youth-adult section of the San Vittore prison.
The term Methexis, used by Plato to indicate the participation of sensible things in ideas, expresses the philosophy of the project: to promote active and transformative participation through mathematics as a shared experience.
