Sophie-Marie Germain (1 April 1776 – 27 June 1831) taught herself a passion for mathematics, challenging the Parisian society of the time that did not allow women to devote themselves to scientific studies. His main achievements concerned problems in Physics (vibration of elastic membranes) and Number Theory, including the first contributions concerning the validity of Fermat's Last Theorem for an infinite family of exponents. He is famous for his correspondence with Gauss, with whom he formed a bond of friendship based on mutual esteem and respect.
