Balzac e la lingua italiana

Several years ago, René Guise and I embarked on the enterprise of showing Balzac’s knowledge of the Italian language, that is to say both the quantity and the quality of his quotations in this language. Now, returning to the subject on my own, my aim is not to produce a complete cata-logueofthe Italianreferencesoccurring in Balzac butrathertoreassembleamosaicthat, while lacking some tesserae, provides the reader with a clear idea of the features and dimensions of this literary aspect in one of the greatest eighteenth century French authors.

Réminiscences “grotesques” dans les premiers recueils poétiques de Théophile Gautier

The first poetical works of Théophile Gautier, published between 1830 and 1838, are notably influenced by his studies and his juvenile readings; several intertextual connections with con-temporary authors, first of all Victor Hugo, can be observed in these poems, as well as frequent references to poets of previous periods. Gautier had a special preference for some authors of pre-classical age, on whom he wrote a number of critical articles that were initially published in thereview“La France littéraire”, andthencollected in Les Grotesques;thiscontributionconsid-ers some themes and images of Gautier's juvenile poems (Poésies, Albertus, Poésies diverses) that remind of works of Théophile de Viau and Marc de Saint-Amant, two pre-classical poets whose remarkable modernity he often pointed out.

John Banville e la poetica dell’epifania: “sperimentando il passato” nella narrativa irlandese post-joyciana

The essay aims at investigating John Banville’s experimentation with the form of the novel. The focus is on the author’s attitude towards the traditional Irish trend of literary experimentation which, though tracing its origins in a remote past and emerging in Modern age through the work of distinguished writers, identified its best and extreme representative in James Joyce at the beginning of the twentieth century. The analysis of Banville’s work implies to face two strictly connected fundamental issues in the history of Irish literature: first, the relationship of Irish writers with their history and tradition, second their relationship with the ghost of their Master (“The Dead Father”). Within Banville’s wide production, the works here analysed are just a few: Birchwood, Doctor Copernicus, The Book of Evidence. They were chosen since they proved particularly suitable to carry out the proposed investigation.

Armonia e unità nella poesia abbaside: il caso della Siniyya di al-Buhturi

The description of the ruins of the Sassanid royal Palace in Ctesiphon, near Baghdad, by the Abbasid poet al-Buhturi ranks among the masterpieces of classical Arabic poetry. After offering the first complete Italian translation, the article analyses the structure of the ode, drawing a parallel between the subjective condition of the poet and the objective dimension expressed by the architectural description. In the last part, some texts by the historian and adab writer al-Mas‘udi are quoted to suggest a closer identification between the two Persian sovereigns men-tioned in thepoemand oneofal-Buhturi’s patrons, the Abbasid caliph al-Mutawakkil. The poem, under the guise of an ekphrasis, contains a clear allusion to al-Mutawakkil’s assassination by his own son al-Muntasir and exhibits a great degree of coherence.

Il linguaggio scolastico ticinese: alcune osservazioni e peculiarità

Italian is full of regional varieties. This article is focused on the Italian language in use in Swit-zerland (Canton Ticino) and its main aim is to point out (especially lexical) differences be-tween school language in the Italian speaking Switzerland and in Italy. De iure no Swiss standard variety exists for Italian, but de facto many Swiss regional peculiarities can be recognized (in the examined corpus they are divided into 9 categories). The results of the present work suggest that a Fachsprachen (e.g. school language) oriented approach can be effective for point-ingout differences between the Italian language in use in Switzerlandand in Italy. Some dictionaries already started to underline this diathopic factor and to categorize some Swiss terms as Helvetic forms, thus leading to a sort of de iure acknowledgement of the Swiss variety.
